- The Dallas District Golf Association was founded on July 2, 1948 when 11 interested golfers from the Brook Hollow Golf Club, the Dallas Athletic Club, the Dallas Country Club, the Lakewood Country Club and the Northwood Club met in the home of Roy Munger.
The original mission remains the same as it is today--promote the grand old game of golf and provide tournaments for its members. A. Pollard Simon was elected as the first president while Munger and Spec Goldman were named as vice presidents, Jack Tinnin as secretary and L.F. Rodgers as treasurer.
In 1970, the DGA started a scholarship in honor of Graham Ross, who had died the previous year. Ross had been professional at Bob-O-Link Golf Course, Glen Lakes Country Club and the Dallas Athletic Club and also had served as golf coach at Southern Methodist University. Additional scholarships honoring Cotton Dunn, Eldridge Miles, Dennis Ewing, Herb and Suzanne Pohl and Rives McBee have been added in the past five years. More than $200,000 has been given in scholarship aid to more than 60 deserving youngsters in 37 years. The Northern Texas PGA currently runs the fund raiser and the scholarship program.
Former presidents Wally Murray and Chuck Ashmore continued their service to the association by serving as executive directors from 1968-1985 and 1986-2000, respectively. James McAfee, former executive director of the Northern Texas PGA, has served in that capacity for the past seven years.
